Operator pain point

A sending limit is not one number

Google Workspace SMTP relay limits combine organization, user, recipient and transaction dimensions—and temporary throttling is a separate signal.

Checked 2026-10-09

What the sources establish

  1. Published SMTP relay limits include 4.6 million non-unique recipients per organization per 24 hours and 319,444 per 10 minutes.
  2. Published registered-user limits include 10,000 messages and 10,000 unique recipients per 24 hours.
  3. An SMTP relay transaction is limited to 100 recipients.
  4. Gmail user sending limits and SMTP relay limits are separate, and temporary behavior or reputation throttling can also occur.

PunchOp proposed response

  1. Attach every observed error to the exact route, identity, time window and recipient count.
  2. Track rolling-window consumption separately for organization and registered user.
  3. Distinguish a documented quota from temporary throttling or a policy rejection.
  4. Recommend a retry policy only when the SMTP response indicates a temporary condition.
